About Surely…
Interview by Beauford Muenckler and Julie Barrier
Beauford: Well, when did you first hear of Surely’s wisdom-and why should we want to know?
Julie: When I first met Surely, she was hitting the kibble pretty hard. By day, she chewed my shoes and peed on the carpet. By night, she was chasing puppy tails all over the neighborhood. But one day, her wild living and car-chasing stopped.
Beauford: Did you threaten to take her to the pound?
Julie: No. First we tried Melanie, the Nazi dog trainer. Even Melanie didn’t make a dent in Surely’s profligate ways. We had to bring out the big guns. We took her to watch the cartoon movie “All Dogs Go to Heaven.” And Surely began to rethink her puppy folly.
She read in Romans 8 where Paul writes that the whole creation would be renewed and Surely decided to live her doggy years more purposefully.
Beauford: But I’ve always been told that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Julie: But Surely is the exception—she drooled at the thought of a hereafter in heaven, and determined she would learn about God by reading the Bible.
Beauford: Surely’s reading her Bible every day?
Julie: Yes, she’s a puppy of few words, but often she can put her paw right on the problem.
Beauford: That sounds awfully ambitious for a pet.
Julie: Well, Surely’s a pretty smart canine….much smarter than a pea-brained poodle or a prissy Pekingese.
Beauford: So why do you feel Surely should give her thoughts to the world?
Julie: First of all, she’s non-partisan-neither Republican or Democrat. She’s not prejudiced by gender or species. She loves all walks of life…two-legged and four-legged. Thirdly, how many sermons have you heard from a golden retriever?
Beauford: Not many, since I left the Methodist church…
Julie: And Surely never asks for donations, except an occasional dog biscuit. Even then, she’s watching her waistline. Blondes are vain that way…
Beauford: I’m panting to hear more from Surely..
Julie: She’ll be writing a bible study for the week. Each day there’s a set of questions to study for your personal devotions. We’re even thinking of doing an evangelism explosion at the dog track. Greyhounds need God’s word, too.
Beauford: Keep checking us out, we’ll be scratching at your screen.
